Avoiding Clogged Pipes Takes A Little Care

At least twice a year, in the spring and fall, a homeowner should take preventative measures to ensure your pipes remain clogged-free.

Most drain clogs form in the traps of pipes in toilets, sinks, and bathtubs. Leaks can be dislodged with a plunger, a hand auger, or liquid chemicals. Clogged pipes are never fun, but a homeowner can avoid most of them if the following things are kept in mind.

Keeping the drain pipes in your home clear of any clogs is something that you should keep as part of a yearly maintenance schedule. When clogs form in a drain, they can cause severe damage to your kitchen, laundry, or bathroom areas by water backing up and spilling over onto the floor.

Here are some ways to keep drain pipes free and clear of clogs.

Keep it scheduled on the Calendar: Keeping the drain pipes in a home clear of clogs must be a part of your yearly maintenance routine.

At least twice a year, in the spring and fall, a homeowner should take preventative measures to ensure your pipes remain clogged-free. These steps are relatively inexpensive and can save money on repairs later.

Look out for Roots and Trees: Knowing where the main drain pipe leaves your home and empties into a sewage tank or town waste disposal is best. Knowing this location lets you know if any trees or roots may impede the line.

When roots grow close to a drain pipe, two things can happen. First, they will grow around the pipe, eventually causing it to crack from the pressure. Second, it can grow right through the piping. Trim back trees near the drain pipe and stop the growth of any roots seen heading towards the drain pipe.

Pour vinegar down the drain: To clean drains naturally, use vinegar as a cleaner. Mix one part of white vinegar with five parts of water and pour it down the drain in the spring and fall. The mixture will travel through the pipes and keep anything growing from going any further.

Have a Water softener: A water softener is mainly thought of when people want to keep water supply lines free from clogs. But, you must remember that what comes into the house must also leave the house. The water softener continuously keeps drain pipes from clogging, but they also require some maintenance. If a home has a water softener, it will need salt to keep the filter clean.

Use a plunger: The only time a plunger comes to mind is when water runs out over the toilet lid or rises so high you begin to panic. However, you can work around the house with a small plunger and keep drain pipes clear.

The suction from the plunger will work at the loose deposits and hair build-up to keep the water flowing. Give each drain in a home a simple plunging a few times a year, and the home should have no problems.
